My first boyfriend: Bob Eubanks

By Sue

SueI have to tell you, my first boyfriend was Bob Eubanks. As years went on, we all know that Bob Eubanks became the emcee for "The Newlywed Game" on TV. But we knew nothing about TV at that time. We did know about it, but we just didn’t have anything. We’d lay down on the floor in front of the radio and watched it and listen to "Fibber McGee and Molly," "Inner Sanctum" and the squeaking door, all the things that you would think would be on TV were right there on radio. I used to go down to Bob Eubanks' house, and his mother was so kind. She would bake cookies, and we used to have so much fun. He used to come up and roller skate with me. What a handsome young man he was.

Another time, I went to a show with two little girls, and we were twirling batons. As I thought throughout all of the things I’ve ever done, I thought about this one show that I went to, I couldn’t twirl the baton. I was so scared. It was for a TV show, and it was called "The Al Jarvis Variety Show," and don’t ask me how I remembered that.

He had a lady that was his co-host, and recently I kept thinking about it and thinking about it, because I wanted to put this in my story, and the lady was Betty White. I had somebody look that up for me. I remembered Betty White’s face, and I thought, "Gosh, I know this lady, I know this lady." Well, when I gave the information to one of my friends, and she did look it up, and yes, I was right, it was Betty White, and it was Al Jarvis. Oh my gosh, I was so excited, I couldn’t wait to write this down in my story.

Oh, by the way, I spent more time picking up my baton than I did twirling it. Needless to say, I never was a majorette. But I also used to go where I took baton lessons and my teacher there, she used to have square dancing, and I used to dance around with one young kid, because he was as short as I was, but he sang. And come to find out, as time went on, he was Tommy from the Mouseketeers, and that’s another thing that’s so exciting to me. But I had to give that up.

My mom and dad finally split up, and my mother and my sister and I moved into one place over in an apartment above a man’s home. Of course, there we go again. My dad moved in, because my sister was getting married, and he wanted to be in the wedding. So my dad moved back in with us, and as soon as my sister got married, my dad moved out, but he never touched my mother.
